There is a great article on about the development of an artist in the November issue of Art in America entitled REVISION NUMBER TWELVE BLOCKBUSTERS – by Dave Hickey. It talks about the artists – music / film / art and is centered around Tom Dowd – on the second page is picture of Boz Scagg’s Silk Degree’s album with the caption, “Scagg’s offense was to have created a blockbuster album without creating a franchise . . . ” Boz was a client and friend when he released Silk Degree’s, shortly after he hired Irving Azoff and left our firm. Steve Miller had released Fly Like an Eagle about the same time and the rest is history. There were a slug of albums that sold +5M units in this period – Frampton Comes Alive, Eagles’ Hotel California, Fleetwood Mac. Boz’s follow up album failed because he refused to work with David Paich . . . greed!
